Tire pressure, explained properly

Correct tire pressure is the cheapest performance, safety, and fuel-economy upgrade that exists — and most cars on the road are running low. Where your correct pressure is written

Open the driver's door and look at the sticker on the door jamb (occasionally it's in the fuel-filler flap or the owner's manual). That placard lists the manufacturer's recommended cold pressure for front and rear tires — commonly 32–36 PSI on passenger cars, sometimes different front to rear.

Ignore the number on the tire sidewall. That figure (often 44–51 PSI) is the tire's maximum rated pressure, not a recommendation. Inflating to it makes the ride harsh, wears the tread center, and reduces grip. The placard number is engineered for your specific vehicle's weight and handling; the sidewall number belongs to the tire alone.

Cold means cold

Placard pressures assume "cold" tires: parked at least three hours, driven less than a couple of miles. Driving heats the air inside and raises the reading by 2–6 PSI, so a tire checked hot at 36 might really be a 32 cold — fine. The mistake is bleeding a hot tire down to the placard number, which leaves it underinflated once it cools. Check cold, ideally in the morning before driving. Temperature swings and seasons

Rule of thumb: tire pressure changes about 1 PSI per 10 °F of ambient temperature. A tire set to 35 PSI in a 90° August is sitting near 29 by the first 30° morning — which is exactly when TPMS lights bloom across every parking lot. Underinflation vs overinflation

Underinflated tires flex more, run hotter, wear their shoulders, brake longer, and cost measurable fuel — chronic low pressure is also the leading mechanical contributor to blowouts. Overinflated tires wear their centers, ride harshly, and shrink the contact patch in the wet. Between the two, low is the common and more damaging failure; a monthly 60-second check with an accurate inflator eliminates it. When the TPMS light comes on

A solid light means one or more tires is roughly 25% below placard — inflate all four to spec and the light should clear after a short drive (some cars need a manual reset; our TPMS reset guide lists the procedures). A light that returns within days means a slow leak: find and fix it rather than re-inflating forever.
