TPMS light on? Read it, then reset it
The horseshoe-with-an-exclamation-mark light has exactly two messages, and most drivers only know one of them. Solid means pressure; flashing means the monitoring system itself has a fault, which is a completely different problem with a completely different fix. Read the light correctly first and you'll skip a lot of wasted effort — and the majority of solid lights clear on their own once you put air in all four tires and drive a few miles.

The distinction that trips people up: a flashing light does not mean your tires are low. It means the car cannot vouch for them. Cars with a flashing TPMS light frequently have four perfectly inflated tires and one sensor whose ten-year lithium cell has finally died. Inflating tires will not clear it, and neither will any reset button.
Direct or indirect — it changes everything
Most vehicles from about 2008 onward use direct TPMS: a battery-powered sensor inside each wheel transmits actual pressure to a receiver. Those sensors last roughly 7–10 years, are not serviceable, and must be relearned to the car when they move position. Some cars, particularly a number of European and Asian models, use indirect TPMS instead: no sensors at all, the ABS wheel-speed sensors infer a low tire from its slightly smaller rolling radius. Indirect systems have no batteries to die, cost nothing to maintain, and always require a manual reset after you adjust pressures — the reset is what tells the car "this is now correct".
You can tell which you have in ten seconds: if the dash can display individual tire pressures, it's direct. If it only shows a warning light, it's probably indirect. Your owner's manual will confirm, and it will name the reset button.
Inflate first — it fixes most of them
Before touching any reset procedure, put air in the tires. TPMS triggers at about 25% below the placard pressure, which on a 35 PSI car is around 26 PSI — low enough to matter, not low enough to see by eye. Cold weather does this on its own: pressure falls roughly 1 PSI per 10 °F, so the first hard frost lights up half a parking lot. The full seasonal picture is in winter tire pressure.

- Set all four cold, including the tire that isn't complaining, and don't forget a full-size spare on vehicles that monitor it. Technique: how to use a tire inflator.
- Add 2–3 PSI of headroom above placard on direct systems if you're inflating on a cold morning; it keeps you out of the warning band as temperatures fall further.
- Drive at over 15 mph for about ten minutes. Sensors only transmit when the wheels are turning, so a car sitting in a driveway will keep showing the light no matter what you've done.
- If it's still lit after that drive, move on to the relearn — or, if the light was flashing all along, to diagnosis.

Relearn procedures, by approach
Manufacturers use one of four approaches. Find yours in the manual, but the shape is always one of these.

A basic TPMS tool that triggers sensors and reads IDs is inexpensive and pays for itself the first time you swap winter wheels; the OBD-capable versions cost more. If you rotate wheels seasonally on a car that needs a stationary or OBD relearn, either buy the tool or budget a small shop fee twice a year.
The light that means a real problem
Take these seriously rather than resetting them. A light that returns within days of correct inflation is a leak — chase it with soapy water using the slow-leak procedure rather than topping up forever. A light accompanied by a tire that is visibly low, hot, or making noise means stop driving now; a tire run flat for even a few miles is scrap regardless of what a plug can do afterwards. And a flashing light that persists after inflation is a system fault: driving is safe, but you have lost your early warning of a puncture until it's fixed, which on a long trip is the whole point of the system.
Two things not to do. Don't disable or ignore the system because the sensors are old — replacement sensors are commodity parts now. And don't over-inflate to keep the light off; that trades one problem for another, as can you overinflate a tire covers. Common questions
Why is my TPMS light still on after I inflated the tires?
Sensors only report while the wheels are turning, so you need to drive above 15 mph for about ten minutes before the light clears. If it stays on after that drive, either one tire is still below the threshold — check with a second gauge — or your vehicle needs a manual reset or relearn.
What does a flashing TPMS light mean?
A light that flashes for 60 to 90 seconds at startup and then stays solid indicates a fault in the monitoring system itself, most often a sensor whose battery has died after 7 to 10 years. It is not a low-pressure warning, and inflating the tires will not clear it.
Can I reset the TPMS light myself?
