RV tire inflators
An RV tire is not a big car tire. Trailer and motorhome rubber runs at 60 to 110 PSI cold, and it takes several times the air volume of a passenger tire to get there. That combination breaks most inflators in two separate ways: the pump either can't reach the pressure at all, or it reaches it so slowly that its thermal cutout trips before the second tire is done. A travel trailer has four of these tires; a Class A with duals has six.
So this category is narrow on purpose. What qualifies is a battery-clamp compressor or a high-output cordless unit with a genuine 120–150 PSI ceiling, measurable airflow at 90 PSI rather than at zero, and either continuous duty or a duty cycle you can plan around. Three of the 22 units on our bench cleared that bar. Continuous duty. It took our trailer tire from 80 to 100 PSI in 1:55 and never needed to stop — six tires back to back is a non-event.

The 450P is the one we keep in the bay of our own test trailer, and it is the pick if you have duals or a six-tire motorhome. Choose the 300P instead only if weight matters more than continuous running — it is 3.5 pounds lighter and moves more free air, it simply cannot do it indefinitely at 100 PSI.
Match the unit to your rig
Teardrop or small utility trailer
ST tires at 50–65 PSI, four of them. The Viair 88P has the ceiling for this and nothing more — 0.8 CFM at 90 PSI and a 25% duty cycle make it a slow but honest fit.
Travel trailer or fifth wheel
ST225 or ST235 tires at 65–80 PSI. This is where the 300P and 450P separate, and where the ranked picks make the call for you.
Class A or dually motorhome
80–110 PSI across six tires with inner duals to reach. Continuous duty stops being a luxury; see the heavy-duty ranking.
What we tested, and what stalled
Every unit ran the same job: an ST225/75R15 trailer tire taken from 80 to 100 PSI, three times, median reported. Alongside it we measured airflow at the chuck at 90 PSI — the number that predicts the time — and ran each compressor until it either finished six tires or shut down. The 450P, 300P, and Milwaukee M18 finished; the 88P managed the 80→100 range but wants a rest that makes six tires a long afternoon.
Everything from the 12V socket-powered category failed outright, and not marginally. Those pumps top out at 70–100 PSI on the label — the EPAuto at 70, the VacLife at 90 — and a compressor's real-world ceiling is always below its rating. Even the ones that claim 150 PSI move 0.3–0.5 CFM at 35 PSI, which collapses toward nothing by 90. The GSPSCN dual-cylinder is the interesting near-miss: it claims 3.5 CFM free-flow and we measured 0.7 CFM at 90 PSI, so it will get there eventually, with the fitting and QC caveats in its review.
The four specs that decide it
Pressure ceiling, with headroom. Buy a compressor rated at least 30 PSI above your placard figure. A unit rated 120 PSI works comfortably at 80; the same unit at 110 PSI is running at its limit, hot, and slow. Rated maximums are measured under ideal conditions and at essentially zero flow.
CFM at working pressure, not free-flow. This is the single most misread spec on the box. Our 450P moves 1.86 CFM free-flow but 1.2 CFM at 90 PSI; the 300P falls from 2.30 to 1.4. Both numbers are honest — they're just measuring different things, and only the second one predicts how long you stand next to the tire. Duty cycle multiplied by tire count. A 33% duty compressor runs roughly 15 minutes and rests 30. At 2:10 per tire that's fine for four; add duals and you are scheduling breaks in the sun. Continuous duty is the reason the 450P exists.
Reach and valve access. Trailer valve stems sit behind wheel wells, and inner duals need a dual-head chuck or a bolt-on extender. Look for 20–25 feet of combined hose and power lead, and screw-on chucks rather than clip-on ones — clip-ons pop off above about 80 PSI. Power comes from battery clamps for the same reason it does elsewhere in the portable compressor category: above roughly 15 amps, accessory sockets melt.
