How to inflate RV tires safely

RV tires fail for two reasons more than any others: they were run underinflated for the load they were carrying, or they were inflated to the sidewall maximum because nobody knew what else to use. Both are avoidable in an afternoon. This guide covers where the correct number comes from, how to reach valves on dual wheels, the safety habits that matter at triple-digit pressure, and — since most people arrive here after a pump has failed them — the compressor specs the job actually requires.

Your pressure comes from axle weight, not the sidewall

The number moulded into an RV tire's sidewall — 80 PSI, 110 PSI, sometimes 125 — is the pressure at which that tire carries its maximum rated load. It is a limit, not a target. The correct pressure is whatever the tire manufacturer's load-and-inflation table specifies for the weight actually sitting on that tire, plus a safety margin.

Getting the weight means a scale. A CAT scale at a truck stop gives you axle weights for a few dollars, which is the minimum useful data; a rally weighing service that reads individual wheel positions is better, because side-to-side imbalance of 500–800 lb is routine in motorhomes with a slide and a full fresh-water tank on one side. Weigh the rig loaded the way you travel: full water and propane, passengers aboard, bays packed.

Then take the heaviest wheel position on each axle, look up the required pressure in your tire maker's table, add 5 PSI of margin, and run every tire on that axle at that pressure. Never mix pressures side to side on the same axle. Trailer tires are the exception that proves the rule: because trailer loads shift and most owners never weigh, running ST tires at their sidewall maximum is the conventional and defensible choice. Motorhome tires are not like that — a Class A at sidewall max on the steer axle rides badly and wanders, and the load table will usually tell you to run 10–20 PSI below the maximum. Two temperature notes. Set pressures cold, before the rig has moved more than a mile — RV tires gain 10–15 PSI when hot, more in desert heat, and that rise is designed in. Do not bleed a hot tire down. And ambient temperature moves pressure about 1 PSI per 10 °F, which on a 100 PSI tire is a meaningful swing between a mountain morning and a valley afternoon; see winter tire pressure for the cold-season version of the same maths.

Reaching the valve on dual wheels

The inner tire of a dual pair is the one that fails, because it is the one nobody checks. Its valve stem points inward, sits behind the outer wheel, and often ends in a rubber stem that will not accept a normal chuck at any useful angle.

The fix is hardware, not technique. A pair of dual-wheel extension hoses — braided stainless, screwed onto the inner stem and clamped to the outer wheel so the free end presents a Schrader valve through a hand hole — turns a ten-minute contortion into a five-second check. Buy the ones with a solid mounting bracket; unsupported extenders whip at speed and crack their own seals, which is how an extender becomes the leak. Fit a metal valve cap with a rubber seal on the free end — on an extended stem that cap is a real second seal.

On the pump side, a screw-on brass chuck beats a lever clip on high-pressure tires. At 100 PSI the escaping air when you break a clip-on connection is genuinely startling, and a threaded chuck lets you thread it on, walk the hose out, and fill without holding anything. The inflation sequence

  1. Check cold and check all of them. First thing in the morning, before you drive. Record each position; a tire that needs 5 PSI more than its neighbour every trip is telling you something.
  2. Set up on level ground with the rig secured. Chocks in, parking brake on — you'll be crouched beside several tons of vehicle for minutes per tire.
  3. Power the compressor properly. Battery-clamp units go straight to the terminals, red first, engine running. Do not run a 100 PSI compressor from a 12V accessory socket — the socket's 15 A fuse is below what the motor draws at pressure, and blown fuses are the polite failure mode.
  4. Thread the chuck on, stand to the side, and fill. Position yourself away from the tire's sidewall plane, not in front of it. Fill in one continuous run if the compressor's duty cycle allows it, and stop 2 PSI short of target.
  5. Verify with a separate gauge, then top up. A dedicated high-pressure dial or digital gauge rated to 160 PSI is the reference; the built-in gauge is the working display. Technique in how to check tire pressure.
  6. Cap every valve and let the compressor cool before storing it. A hot compressor put straight into a sealed bay is a compressor that ages fast.

What the compressor actually has to do

This is where most RV owners waste money. A pump's headline "150 PSI" number says nothing about whether it can move air at 100 PSI — flow collapses as pressure rises, and duty cycle decides whether you finish six tires or two. On our RV protocol — ST225/75R15, 80→100 PSI, per tire — the Viair 450P took 1:55 and never needed to stop, because it is rated for 100% duty and measured 1.2 CFM at 90 PSI at the chuck. The Viair 300P was quicker off the mark at 2:10 with more free-flow air, but at 33% duty it wanted a rest after two tires — fine for a travel trailer's four, tedious on a dually. The Milwaukee M18 managed 2:40 per tire and got through four RV tires on one battery, which makes it the convenient choice if you're already on the platform and only ever top up.

Budget 12V inflators with a 70–90 PSI ceiling cannot do this job at all. Not slowly — at all. They stall below your target and overheat trying, which is why budget picks stay in the car and out of the RV bay. The category overview lives in the RV tire inflators hub.

High-PSI safety habits

Stand out of the sidewall plane while filling, and never lean over a tire you're inflating. Inspect before you inflate: a tire with a visible bulge, a cut into the cords, or a date code more than six or seven years old should be replaced, not pumped up — RV tires almost always time out before they wear out, and age failure at 100 PSI is violent. A tire run completely flat under load is scrap even if it holds air afterwards.

Finally, add a TPMS. A six-tire aftermarket monitoring system is the only thing that tells you about a slow leak on an inner dual while you're doing 62 mph, and it turns a blowout into a pull-over.
