The best tire inflators for trucks
Buy the Viair 300P. It moves 1.4 CFM at the chuck at 90 PSI — the number that decides how long you stand next to a load-range E tire — clamps to the battery so the accessory fuse is not a limit, and has lived in one of our truck beds for months without complaint. If your garage runs red, the Milwaukee M18 is faster still and needs no wires at all. Everything below those two is a compromise, and the pocket pumps most truck owners already carry are not slow at this job so much as unsuited to it.
What a truck tire actually asks for
A 285/70R17 load-range E tire holds roughly two and a half times the air of the 205/55R16 we time every inflator on, and it wants that air at 65–80 PSI rather than 35. Both halves of that matter. Volume sets how long the pump must run; pressure sets how much air it can still move while running. Airflow collapses as pressure rises, which is why we publish free-flow CFM and then the figure we measured at the chuck at 90 PSI — the second number is typically half the first, and on one unit here it is a fifth.
Duty cycle is the other half of the story. Four load-range E tires from 50 to 80 PSI is fifteen to twenty minutes of near-continuous running. A compressor rated for 33% duty can do it with rests; a 12V glovebox pump rated for ten minutes cannot do it at all without cooling down twice. Viair 300P Portable Compressor

The 300P is the overlanding standard because it is honest. Viair claims 2.30 CFM free-flow; we measured 1.4 CFM still coming out of the chuck at 90 PSI, which is the best flow-at-pressure of any portable unit we have put on the bench short of a shop compressor. On a 33-inch tire aired down to 15 PSI for a trail, it comes back to 35 in about three minutes per corner. On our standard car tire it manages 28→36 in 1:02.
The battery clamps are the design decision that makes those numbers possible — a 12V accessory socket cannot legally pass enough current to feed a compressor this size, so anything that plugs into your dash is capped before it starts. In exchange you open the hood every time. The 33% duty cycle at 100 PSI means a rest between the second and third tire on a full set from low; if you want to skip the waiting, that is the 450P below.

0:49 from 28 to 36 PSI is the fastest fill we have ever timed, and unlike the pocket units that quote big numbers, the M18 keeps flowing where it counts: 1.1 CFM at 60 PSI, measured at the chuck. It treats a load-range E tire as routine rather than as an ordeal, its gauge held to half a PSI against our reference, and a 5Ah pack managed nine complete car-tire top-ups before dying. No clamps, no idling engine, no cord to trip over in a dark lay-by.
What you give up is unlimited runtime. A compressor with battery clamps will keep going as long as the truck's battery does; the M18 stops when the pack does, and a full set of big tires from genuinely low pressure will eat most of a 5Ah. Carry a spare. It is also priced like the professional tool it is, and it weighs 5.9 lb bare.

The 450P trades a little peak flow for something the 300P cannot offer at any price: it does not stop. Rated for 100% duty, it ran continuously through our RV protocol without a thermal break, taking a trailer tire from 80 to 100 PSI in 1:55 and then doing the next one immediately. On a dually with six tires, or a work truck that gets topped up before every shift, that removes the only real friction in the job.
The costs are physical and financial: 12.4 lb, a bigger bag, 88 dB, and a price that makes sense only when you are actually using the endurance. For a weekend truck with four tires, the 300P finishes the job sooner and costs less.

The GSPSCN costs roughly half a Viair and looks the part: twin cylinders, battery clamps, a metal body. On our car tire it managed 1:44, which is respectable. Then we measured airflow. The box claims 3.5 CFM free-flow; at the chuck at 90 PSI we recorded 0.7 CFM — half the 300P and a fifth of the advertised figure. It will inflate a truck tire; it will take about twice as long as the Viair while doing it, and its gauge was 2.5 PSI out at the worst of our three check points.
There is also a QC lottery. Across the units we have handled, hose fittings have arrived over-torqued or weeping, and the supplied chuck is the weakest part of the package. Keep a spare brass chuck in the bag and verify pressure with a separate gauge and you have a working compressor for little money. Want to open a box and trust the readout? Buy a Viair.

The glovebox units that cannot cope
Plainly: a 12V socket pump is the wrong tool for load-range E. The AstroAI, EPAuto, VacLife, Slime, and Fanttik-class units we recommend elsewhere move about 0.3–0.5 CFM at 35 PSI, and much less than that as pressure climbs toward 65. The EPAuto's ceiling is 70 PSI and the VacLife's is 90, so on a truck placard calling for 80 PSI cold they are either at their limit or past it. Even the ones rated to 150 PSI are limited by the accessory circuit long before the motor gives up, and their 8–15 minute duty cycles expire partway through the second tire.
None of that makes them bad inflators — the AstroAI is our overall best tire inflator for cars. Keep one in the truck for the spare or a friend's sedan; just do not expect it to bring four E-rated tires up on a cold morning. Mid-size vehicles sit in between, and our SUV picks cover those sizes.
How we tested
Fill times come from three runs of 28→36 PSI on the same mounted 205/55R16, median reported, so every model on this site is comparable. Airflow was measured at the chuck with a calibrated flow meter — free-flow first, then at 90 PSI, because that second number is what predicts behaviour on a truck tire and it is the one manufacturers rarely print. Gauges were checked against a calibrated digital reference at 20, 32, and 50 PSI, and we publish the worst deviation. Duty-cycle claims were checked by running each compressor until it shut down thermally or finished our RV protocol. Twenty-two models went through the bench; our methodology is on the about page.
FAQ
Do I need 150 PSI for truck tires?
You need the pump to work well at 65–80 PSI, which is where truck placards live. A 150 PSI rating helps because a compressor near its ceiling flows almost nothing, but the useful spec is CFM at working pressure, not the maximum number on the box.
Battery clamps or a 12V socket?
Clamps, for any tire bigger than a light-truck 31. The accessory socket is fused at 15–20 amps, which caps the motor a real compressor needs, so socket-powered units are limited before the pump is. Clamps mean opening the hood, and that is the whole cost.
How long should four load-range E tires take?
With the Viair 300P, roughly four to five minutes a corner from 50 to 80 PSI, plus a rest after the second tire for its 33% duty cycle. The 450P does the same work without stopping. A budget 12V pump would need two cool-down breaks and most of an hour.
Will a truck inflator work on my car and bike too?
Yes, with the right chuck. All three Viair-class picks fill a car tire faster than any 12V unit, and a Presta adapter makes them usable on bikes — carefully, because 1.4 CFM fills a road tire alarmingly fast. The reverse is not true: a car pump will not do a truck's job.
