Makita DMP180Z inflator, tested
Only buy the DMP180Z if you are already on LXT. That is the verdict, and it is not a dismissal — this is a well-made tool that filled our reference 205/55R16 from 28 to 36 PSI in 1:52 and did it at 74 dB, the quietest tool-battery inflator we have measured. What kept it off our podium is the gauge: ±1.5 PSI worst case, with a visible drift once you go past 50 PSI. In a class where two rivals hold half a PSI at every checkpoint, that is the difference between a recommendation and a qualified one.

1:52 is a fair result — five seconds behind the Ryobi P737D, forty-four behind the Milwaukee M12, and roughly two and a half times quicker than the 12V plug-in class. Run-to-run spread was under five seconds across three fills, so the number is dependable even if it is not impressive.
The gauge is the story. Checked against our calibrated digital reference at 20, 32, and 50 PSI, the DMP180Z tracked within about a PSI at the two lower points and then opened up to a PSI and a half at 50, always reading high. That means a tire you set to 50 comes off the chuck nearer 48.5. On a sedan running 35 PSI you will never notice it. On a motorcycle, where a 42 PSI rear wants to be 42, or on a light-truck tire at 50, it is the kind of error that quietly compounds — and it is why the DMP180Z does not appear in best digital inflators despite having every feature that category asks for. Noise is the counterweight, and it is a bigger deal than the spec sheet makes it look. 74 dB is 4 dB below the M12, 7 below the Ryobi, and 8 below the M18 — audibly about half as loud as the Milwaukee M18 to the ear, with a smoother, lower note that does not carry across a campsite. Nothing else that runs off a tool battery comes close. Only self-contained and 12V units beat it, and they take three to five minutes per tire to do so; the measured dB ranking for every model is in best quiet tire inflators.
Five complete fills from a 5Ah LXT pack is mid-pack endurance: one set of four tires with a little left over. Note that this is from a 5Ah battery, where the Ryobi manages five from a 4Ah — the Makita is not especially efficient, it just ships alongside bigger packs.
Design and usability
Build quality is the best thing about this tool after the noise figure. The housing is dense, the seams are tight, the rubber overmould is where your hands go rather than where the marketing photo needs it, and the whole thing has the reassuring density Makita's better LXT tools share. Our unit has spent months in a truck bed toolbox and shows nothing but dust.
The layout is conventional: backlit LCD, up/down pressure buttons, a start trigger, and a screw-on chuck on a short braided hose. Two design choices stand out. First, the hose is shorter than most of the group, which means the tool has to sit close to the wheel — fine on a driveway, awkward on a kerbside where you would rather keep it out of the gutter. Second, the unit stores its nozzles in a small door that closes properly, so the needle and cone are still with the tool a year later.
The 120 PSI ceiling is a real limit, matching the M12. It is plenty for cars, bikes, and motorcycles, and useless for the 80→100 PSI trailer work covered in how to inflate RV tires. Combined with the gauge drift above 50 PSI, this is a low-pressure tool and should be bought as one.
Who it's for — and who should skip it
Buy it if you own LXT batteries and want a cordless inflator. On that condition it is a good purchase: the bare-tool price is competitive, the build is the best in the group, and the noise advantage is genuine — it is the one tool-battery inflator you can run in an attached garage at night without a conversation about it afterwards. Verify the auto-stop pressure with a separate stick gauge on anything above 45 PSI and the accuracy issue stops mattering.
Who should skip it: anyone who does not already own LXT batteries. Buying into an 18V platform for a tire pump is expensive at the best of times, and this is not the tool worth doing it for — the M12 is faster and more accurate, the Ryobi is cheaper and equally accurate, and a good USB-C unit from best built-in-battery inflators costs a fraction of a Makita battery. Skip it too if you ride motorcycles or run tires above 50 PSI where the drift bites, and skip it if you tow — the 120 PSI ceiling rules out RV and trailer work entirely.
Versus its main rivals
Against the Milwaukee M12 it loses on the two numbers most buyers care about — 1:52 to 1:08 on fill time, ±1.5 to ±0.5 on gauge error — and wins on noise (74 dB to 78 dB) and, arguably, on housing rigidity. Against the Ryobi P737D it is five seconds slower, half a PSI less certain, and 7 dB quieter, with a clearly better-built body and a lower max pressure. That is a genuinely close call decided almost entirely by which batteries are on your shelf.
