The best air mattress pumps

For a guest bed at home, buy the cheap dedicated AC pump. It filled our queen mattress in 1:20 — the fastest time on our bench — it costs less than a takeaway dinner, and it does nothing else, which is exactly the point. Everything below exists because "at home, near an outlet" isn't everyone's situation: campsites have no mains, tents have no sockets, and some people would rather own one machine than four.

The one thing we won't tell you is to use your tire inflator. High-pressure piston pumps and high-volume impeller pumps are different machines built for opposite problems, and the reason is explained at length on the air mattress pump hub. The single exception is a genuine dual-mode tool, and there is one on this list.

There is no clever engineering here and that is the whole appeal. A wide impeller, a mains cord, and three rubber cones that seal against the common bed valve sizes. Ours took the queen mattress from flat to properly firm in 1:20 across three runs with less than five seconds of spread, and reversed onto the deflate port to pull it back down small enough to fit its original bag — which hand-rolling never achieves.

The compromises are the ones you'd expect: loud in the way a hairdryer is loud, no gauge and no auto-stop because at these pressures neither means anything, and dead weight the moment you leave the house. It will not touch a bicycle tire, a paddle board, or anything else that goes hard rather than soft — for those, start with the buying guide.

Best dual-purpose

The DCC020IB is the only tool on this page that genuinely contains two pumps: a piston side that took our 205/55R16 car tire from 28 to 36 PSI in 1:21, and a separate high-volume port with a fat hose that filled the queen bed in 1:35. Fifteen seconds behind a purpose-built AC pump, from a machine that also airs up tires, is a remarkable piece of packaging. The deflate side is the best here at 0:50.

What earns it a camping-list place is power flexibility: 20V battery in the field, the car's 12V socket when that's flat, mains at home. What keeps it off the top spot is cost and bulk. Best for car camping

The category everyone forgets. A high-volume impeller on a cigarette-lighter plug fills the same queen bed in 1:50 with the car parked next to the tent, and because it draws from the vehicle it has no runtime limit and no charge state to forget about six months into a season. Ours pulled the bed flat again in a minute on the deflate port.

Two cautions. Run the engine, or accept that a five-minute session on a marginal battery is a real risk at a remote site. And these pumps are as cheaply built as their price suggests — the cone nozzles are the failure point, so keep the spares. This is a volume pump on a 12V plug, not a member of the 12V tire inflator family; the plug is all they share.

  • Pros: unlimited runtime from the car; nothing to charge; cheap enough to keep permanently in a camping bin; deflate port included.
  • Cons: tethered to the vehicle; draws real current, so run the engine; flimsy nozzles; no use at home unless you park close.
Verdict: buy this if the mattress only ever comes out at a campsite you can drive to. Buy the AC pump instead if it's mostly a guest bed.

Best ultralight

Flextail Tiny Pump

At just over four ounces this is the only pump here you would carry on your back, and it still filled the full queen bed in 2:10 — fifty seconds behind a mains pump that weighs ten times as much. On the sleeping pads it was actually designed for, it is over in a fraction of that. At 62 dB it is also the quietest air mover we've measured, which matters at 10pm in a shared campground.

Understand its limits precisely: it is a volume tool with no meaningful pressure ceiling. It cannot inflate a bicycle tire, a car tire, or a paddle board, and we could only check its gauge behaviour at 20 PSI on the bench because it never gets near the pressures the rest of our test rig uses. Within its lane it is superb, which is what our Flextail Tiny Pump review concludes.

  • Pros: genuinely pocketable; quietest on test; deflates as well as inflates; doubles as a camp-stove blower and lantern.
  • Cons: slowest queen fill here; small battery means a big bed is a real chunk of its charge; no pressure capability at all; small nozzle set.
Verdict: the right answer only when weight is the constraint. If you can drive to the tent, the 12V pump is faster and cheaper.

Why your tire inflator is the wrong tool

We ran the test anyway so the number exists. A high-pressure 12V tire inflator of the AstroAI or EPAuto class moves 0.3–0.5 CFM at tire pressures — a piston compressing a small charge of air very hard. An air bed needs roughly the opposite: hundreds of litres delivered at under 1 PSI. The piston pump crawls, and its 8–15 minute duty cycle trips long before the mattress is firm, so you get a hot pump, a soft bed, and a shortened tool life.

The reverse also holds, and it is the reason a bed pump is never a substitute for a real inflator: an impeller simply cannot build pressure. It will not put 36 PSI in a car tire, 25 PSI in a mountain bike tire, or 15 PSI in a paddle board. If you want one machine for both jobs, a dual-mode tool like the DeWalt is the only honest route. How we tested

Each pump ran the same queen air mattress from fully flat to firm — defined as the point where a flat hand pressed into the centre stops sinking — three times, with the median time reported and the mattress fully deflated between runs. Where a deflate mode existed we timed it from firm to bag-ready. Noise was measured at one meter during the fill. We also recorded nozzle fit across the four bed valve sizes in our kit, and for the dual-mode DeWalt we cross-checked its tire performance against our standard 28→36 PSI protocol on a 205/55R16 so the two sides of the tool are directly comparable with everything else on the site. FAQ

Can I use a tire inflator on an air mattress?

Practically, no. A tire inflator is a high-pressure piston pump that moves 0.3 to 0.5 CFM, and a queen air bed needs hundreds of litres at under 1 PSI. The fill takes tens of minutes and the pump's duty cycle usually trips first. Use a high-volume pump, or a dual-mode tool like the DeWalt DCC020IB.

How long should a queen air bed take to fill?

Between 1:20 and 2:10 on our bench. A dedicated mains pump managed 1:20, the DeWalt's high-volume mode 1:35, a 12V camp pump 1:50, and the ultralight Flextail 2:10.

Do I really need a deflate mode?

Yes, if the mattress ever has to go back in its bag. Pushing air out by hand takes longer than any of our timed deflate runs and never gets the bed small enough. The DeWalt took 50 seconds, the Flextail 1:05.

Will an air mattress pump inflate a paddle board?

No. A SUP needs a true 12 to 15 PSI, which an impeller pump cannot generate at any speed. That job needs a dedicated high-pressure SUP pump — see our best paddle board pumps.

Why does my air bed feel softer in the morning?

Mostly temperature. Air contracts as a room cools overnight, and the same physics drops tire pressure about 1 PSI per 10°F, as covered in our winter tire pressure guide. New mattresses also stretch for the first few nights. Top it up rather than assuming a leak.
