Slime 40051 direct-drive inflator
The Slime 40051 is the slowest unit on our bench — 6:10 to take a 205/55R16 from 28 to 36 PSI, out of 22 models tested — and its analog gauge reads a consistent 1.5 PSI high. We still recommend it, but for exactly one job: the tool that lives in a trunk, gets opened once every three years in a parking lot at night, and has to work anyway. One dial, one switch, no screens, no microcontroller, no auto-stop logic to fail. If that isn't the purchase you're making, buy something faster.

On the bench
Three timed fills on the same mounted tire produced 6:04, 6:10 and 6:19 — a median of 6:10 and, notably, very little spread. The Slime is slow but it is slow in the same way every time, which is more than several faster units managed. For context inside the budget class, the EPAuto 12V did the same fill in 5:35 and the AstroAI 150 PSI in 4:10. Across four tires that is roughly nine minutes of extra standing around versus the AstroAI. On an emergency call-out, nine minutes is an annoyance. On a monthly top-up routine, it is the reason to buy a different pump.
The direct-drive layout explains both the speed and the durability argument. There is no gear reduction between the motor and the piston, so the pump is mechanically about as simple as an air pump gets, but it also cannot trade rpm for torque as pressure climbs. Progress from 28 to 32 PSI took about half the total time; the last two PSI crawled. The 100 PSI ceiling on the box is real in the sense that the gauge will get there, but we would not plan a job around it — we stopped at 60 PSI on a light-truck tire and the housing was already too hot to hold comfortably. Treat 10 minutes of continuous running as the limit and give it an equal rest, the same rule that applies to every budget 12V pump.
The gauge, and the correction it needs
Checked against our calibrated digital reference at 20, 32 and 50 PSI, the Slime's dial read high at all three points: +1.4, +1.5 and +1.6 PSI respectively. That is a worst-case error of ±1.5 PSI, and it is the good kind of error. A fixed offset is a solvable problem — set the tire to an indicated 37.5 PSI when you want 36, and you are within half a PSI of correct. What ruins an inflator is a gauge that changes its mind between runs, which is precisely why the Hausbell sits outside our rankings while the Slime sits inside our emergency-kit picks.
Two practical notes. The dial is small and the needle bounces hard while the motor runs, so read it with the pump switched off — standard technique for any analog gauge, covered in how to use a tire inflator. Peak noise measured 82 dB at one metre — loud for a budget 12V pump, and a hard flat drone rather than a whine. Six minutes of it is genuinely unpleasant in an enclosed garage. If noise matters more than simplicity, our quiet inflator picks start 14 dB below this.
Design and usability
The control surface is a rocker switch and nothing else. Power comes from the accessory socket on a cord long enough to reach all four wheels of a mid-size sedan without moving the car, which is not true of every 12V unit we tested. The air hose is short — you park the body of the pump on the ground next to the wheel rather than draping it over a fender — and terminates in a screw-on brass chuck. Screw-on is slower to fit than a lever chuck and fiddly with cold fingers, but it does not pop off mid-fill and it does not leak the way the cheap push-on connectors on some rivals do.
At 2.2 lb it is one of the lighter 12V units, and the moulded body takes a beating in a trunk without complaint. There is no work light, no bag, no digital preset, no auto-stop, and no inflatables kit beyond a basic needle and cone. Who it's for — and who should skip it
Buy the Slime if the pump's job is to survive storage. Heat cycling in a summer trunk, sub-freezing cold starts, five years of being slid around under a spare wheel cover — those are the conditions that kill inflators with pressure sensors, LCDs and auto-stop boards, and this unit has none of them to lose. It is a legitimate choice for a second car, a teenager's first car, or a vehicle that gets driven twice a month. Skip it if you will use an inflator more than a few times a year. Skip it if you want to set a pressure and walk away — there is no auto-stop, so you stand over it for six minutes with a hand on the switch. Skip it if you will not remember the −1.5 correction, because an uncorrected Slime leaves every tire about 1.5 PSI under target, which is small but permanent. Skip it for anything above 60 PSI in practice, which rules out RV, trailer and load-range E truck tires entirely. And skip it if you're inflating road-bike tires, where a 1.5 PSI offset on an analog dial is the least of the problems.
Slime 40051 vs the EPAuto 12V
These two land at similar money and answer opposite questions. The EPAuto is 35 seconds faster per tire, reads within ±1 PSI, and has a digital auto-stop that lands close to its preset — you set 36, walk away, and come back to a finished tire. Our long-term EPAuto has topped up tires monthly for two years without a fault, so the "electronics will fail" worry has not materialised on that unit. Against that, the EPAuto tops out at 70 PSI, its gauge depends on a sensor and a board that can drift, and it needs the display to be legible to be useful at all.
